What does a bone density test measure and how is it done?
I have to have my 1st one this year.
Bone density tests exactly that, bone density. Bone is composed of an organic and mineral part. The organic part is a protein network and the mineral part is a kind of calcium phosphate (a form of it called hydroxylapatite).
Because of its tissue density, bone scatters x-rays, which is why x-ray film is not darkly colored behind bone and why bones show up on film as light/white whereas less dense soft tissue does not scatter or absorb x-rays, and the film is darker.
Bone mineral density (BMD) is now measured by low dose x-ray devices which measure density in certain bone locations (lumbar vertebrae, the head or ball of the femur). They don’t use film, but they have a sensitive detector to measure the intensity of x-rays that pass through, and it is calibrated against known densities.
Osteoporosis affects women in particular. It would be useful to get an initial reading of BMD when a woman is relatively young (a baseline) and then follow changes in BMD over the years. Unfotunately, it is not truly practical to screen women, and the machines are not necessarily found everywhere. Your intial reading will likely be followed over time to see if you have a progressive bone mineral loss or to see if you are responding and complying with therapy to prevent or reverse BMD decreases.
